  • Doubled costs for cacao beans and small harvests are impacting local communities.

Dear cacao enthusiast,

The prices of our ceremonial cacao are increasing. We want to explain why this is happening and what it means for us and the women of the Ruk'u'x Ulew collective, with whom we closely collaborate..

A global shift in the cacao industry

Cecilia, the founder of the Ruk'u'x Ulew women's collective, recently shared that she is now paying twice as much for cacao beans. This is due to a global shift in the cacao industry. Large companies have approached Guatemalan farmers with offers triple the regular price, despite their longstanding relationships with local buyers. The result? Ships loaded with cacao left Guatemala, pulling this sacred product away from its roots. Fortunately, agreements are now in place to prevent further exports, ensuring the cacao remains in Guatemala.

Climate change and scarcity

In addition to export challenges, small harvests caused by climate change have exacerbated the situation. Unpredictable weather conditions have made cacao scarcer worldwide, adding pressure on collectives like Ruk'u'x Ulew.

Impact on Ruk'u'x Ulew

The doubled costs of cacao beans and reduced harvests forced Cecilia to take out loans. This financial strain even led to the cancellation of communal lunches, once a cherished moment of connection. We were deeply moved by this and made an immediate donation to the collective to offer direct support.

Everything is locally produced

Every step of the production process, from bean to packaging, takes place in Guatemala. This ensures that all income flows directly back into the local economy, supporting the wages of women, farmers, and everyone involved in production.

The craftsmanship behind the cacao

During our visit, we witnessed the incredible care, attention, and precision required at every stage of production:

  • Sorting the beans: Each bean is hand-sorted by size to ensure perfect roasting.

  • Manual peeling: A labor-intensive task demanding focus and patience.

Cecilia’s cacao, sourced from a single region, boasts a rich, floral, and smooth flavor – without the bitterness found in beans from other areas. This reflects the deep tradition and meticulous care poured into every block of cacao.

Our new prices

As of the 10th of December 2024, the price for a 1-pound block of ceremonial cacao is set at €55. The updated prices are now live on our website. While price increases are never ideal, we hope you understand that this reflects the true value of a product crafted with such care and dedication.

Thank you for your support

With your help, we can continue to enjoy this exceptional cacao while contributing to a sustainable future for the farmers and women of Ruk'u'x Ulew. We remain committed to supporting them and will keep you updated on future developments.

With gratitude, Chantalle, Edwin & Ruk’u’x Ulew woman.
